Top 8 Green Gadgets for Earth Day

SolarRoll-laptop.jpgAs if to assuage their guilt in all matters carbon-related, my colleagues at tech digest have given a nod to Earth Day today with a list of green gadgets to satisfy your geek-fix the green way. Here it is for your scrutiny; follow after the jump for the full list.

1.)SolarRoll - is one of the best for my money. Not only does this little bundle of joy save the planet, it makes your laptop oh-so-much-more portable. I've managed to ghost the battery on my Dell to death. It uses the mains like a life support machine.

The SolarRoll comes in three different sizes of sun-harnessing rubber depending upon what device you want to power, which can be anything from a mobile phone to your computer. They start at a not-too-cheap US$220 and go up to a blimey-I'm-broke US$484 but you'd be the envy of all mobile laptop users and have a very clean conscience. if you don't fancy shelling out the mega-bucks, you could always go for the more specific...

Give your computer a rest with carbon rally

Unplugged.sized.jpgIf -- like many of us bloggers -- you find it difficult to remove yourself from the spod box for even half an hour, this idea will be as a personal challenge as it is an environmental gesture.

The brains behind Carbon Rally have calculated that the electricity required to keep a PC running overnight generates up to 51 lbs of CO2 every month, and the combined energy wasted by consumer electronics in standby mode is as high as 10% of all residential power consumption in developed countries.

Save paper with clean, green evites by Pingg

pinng.JPGAfter having a go at the BBC for sending out huge paper envelopes, I thought I'd suggest a greener way of sending news. Evites have been around for a long time now, but many have compatibility problems when sent via email, or are just downright ugly.

Pingg is a new online invite service has it all: beautifully designed templates, rich customization features, great RVSP list management, and integration with Facebook events. Our favorite feature has to be the email invitations that allow our guests to RSVP without having to go to a web site first - very convenient.

Power dressing: Nanowire clothing turns movement into electricity

power-shirt-georgia-tech.jpg

The 80s are back or at least that's what I thought when I heard that the future was all about power dressing.

Un/fortunately, Professor Zhong Lin Wang of Georgia Tech is not talking about shoulder pads and trouser suits but instead has harnessed the power of nanowires to come up with materials that can convert kinetic energy into electrical current.

The professor's main idea is to make clothing woven from these fibres that would allow your body's natural motion to power any electrical device you may be carrying.

How to turn an ordinary bag into a solar sensation

solar bag.jpg

If you've dreamed of owning a Voltaic solar bag but can't afford the price tag, fear not: it's amazingly simple to make your own. All you'll need is one of Freeloader's fantastically flexible new 'supercharger' solar panels (£19.99 at Maplin), a spare freeloader battery, a mini USB cable, a relevant gadget adaptor and an old rucksack, bicycle pannier or bag of your choice. The total cost is £40; less than half that of the cheapest Voltaic backpack!

Full instructions are available here.

Sagem Launches 'Green' ECO Set Top Boxes

5183_old-fashioned_television_set.jpgIf you can't bear the thought of missing out on this summer's Big Brother live coverage, but want to help save the environment then Sagem reackons that one of its new Freeview boxes could be the gadget for you.

The ITD58NG and ITD59NG Eco Set Top Boxes have been given Energy Saving Trust recommendation, so we don't only have Sagem's word for it that these are greener than your average 'box'. Both models provide connection to over 30 Freeview channels, with a power consumption of less than 5 watts while in operation and less than 2 watts in standby mode -- that's even less energy consumed than Sky's 3 watt standby goal for 2010 as part of its highly praised 'bigger picture' initiative.
