Green things to do: Toft's alpaca fun days

alpaca fun day.jpgIf you've ever wanted to get friendly with an alpaca, this could be your chance. Toft, makers of super soft, sustainable clothes and accessories from happy, hand-reared alpacas are running a series of 'alpaca fun days' this summer. From £10; details on the site.

It may seem a long way till June, but Toft want to keep groups small so book early to avoid disappointment! Activities will include farm walk and tour amongst the alpacas, herding and feeding, petting and handling, halter training and leading, fleece sorting and includes a picnic amongst the alpacas! Adults and children are both welcome, but must be booked seperately due to difference in price. Adults £30 and Childen £10. The days will run on Saturday 7th June and Saturday 16th August 2008 from 10am- 4pm

Chocolate on an organic farm this Easter

visit a farm2.jpgIf you're planning on a rural adventure this Easter weekend, the Soil Association have teamed up with some of Britain's organic farms to run fun events that will give you an insight into where our food comes from as well as making for a great day out.

There'll be farm walks and tours, the promise of "ample opportunities to see gambolling lambs in the fields" - and even the chance to learn about lambing firsthand. If that all sounds a bit messy to you city types, fear not: Green and Blacks have also got involved, and are running Easter Egg hunts at several of the farms. Follow the jump for a list of participating farms, with activity details...

All the fun of the eco fair with Greenfinder

sun_leaf(2) (3).jpgHot on the heels of their Green Christmas Fair in December, our mates over at GreenFinder are planning to hold a second green fair in Leamington Spa, to be held in April.

Along with tempting eco friendly, organic and fair trade stalls there'll be information points where you can seek advice about energy saving, recycling and reducing your carbon footprint. There will also be a mini farmers market within the fair and face painting and educational activities for children.

If you're not too far away, why not try and bike it to the fair? You'll be rewarded with a free "Dr Bike" service from Action 21's team of bike experts.

Greenfinder's Green Fair: Saturday 12th April at the Dale Street Methodist Church from 11-3

Jason Donovan to play Lock Out night for Anti-Slavery at Jongleurs, Camden

jason%20donovan%20between%20the%20lines.jpgIf you thought slavery was a thing of the past, you're sadly mistaken; even today, millions of men, women and children around the world are forced to work through the threat or use of violence, they are bought and sold like objects, work for long hours often for little or no pay and are at the mercy of their employers.

To draw attention to their plight, Anti-Slavery, a charity dedicated to eradicating slavery worldwide, is putting on an event at comedy venue Jongleurs in Camden on the 11th March. The lineup for this 'lock out' night is about the most varied I've ever seen, with appearences from Jason Donovan, the Congo Faith Healers and singer-songwriter Sam Heard. A motley bunch that's guaranteed to entertain! Tickets are £20

Clothes swap fun at Shiny Towers

clothesswapshiny.jpg
On Tuesday Shiny Towers (home of Hippyshopper and oodles of other fabulous blogs) was awash with clothes (well, more than usual!) as we had our first ever clothes swap.

Mad props go to Tech Digest's Kat for bringing in a suitcase full of cast offs. We spent a lunchtime trying on jeans, tops dresses but no undies thanks! It was strange seeing your colleagues try on that top from Primark you never wore and there was one pretty dress from Topshop everyone tried on that didn't seem to fit anyone what ever size they were.

Green things to do this weekend: Christmas Market in Brussels, Fashion Made Fair and more

xmas%20market%20small.jpgThere's plenty going on in the green calendar this weekend, and for a bit of a European flavour, I've looked a bit further afield than the UK for this week's roundup. With the new, high-speed carbon neutral Eurostar service running from St Pancras, getting to the continental Christmas fairs has never been easier or more environmentally friendly. I just spent a weekend in Brussels checking out the winter wonderland that is the Plaisirs D'Hiver Christmas market, where you can see me slurping one of many glasses of delicious Gluhwein, and there's still time to fit in a trip before C-Day! Read on for more info.

Carbon neutral train-it to Brussels
Eurostar1-thumb.jpg
You can now get to the Plaisirs D'Hiver Christmas market by Eurostar in approximately 2 hours from London St Pancras. Last week, my partner and I managed to book return tickets just a day in advance, so this is much more of a realistic last minute shopping prospect than it used to be! I was very impressed with the on-board catering this time around, which has switched from mostly uninviting, dry sandwiches with debatable veggie-option to offering a reasonable selection of organic and fairtrade teas, snacks and food. The napkins and even the bog-roll are all made from recycled paper, and as we reported from the grand opening of St. Pancras, Eurostar is doing all it can to make journeys carbon neutral at no extra cost to passengers.
