The high-street retailer's new range of carbon neutral lingerie, that will be available online, was made in an 'eco factory' in Sri Lanka. The factory has cut down its energy use by a third by ensuring that all lighting is from the sun and low energy light bulbs are used.

Through its Plan A commitment, Marks & Spencer is also tackling climate chance by investing in local rainforest replanting projects.

Soozie Jenkinson, head of lingerie design explains: 'The new range is sophisticated, elegant and glamorous. We've used a combination of intricate lace and dramatic embroidery, inspired by the exotic foliage of the rainforest." So not just eco-friendly, it's fashionable as well.

Eco Fashion Focus: FIN Oslo

Comments (3)

Scandinavia is known for its green thinking and focus on eco-friendly materials, so it was just fitting that a Scandinavian brand would be the first to be featured in our Eco Fashion Focus.

FIN Oslo is a Norwegian label that was founded in 2007 with the vision of introducing high fashion collections that were also environmentally sustainable. Head designer Per Sivertsen explores interpretations of contemporary femininity in his quest for perfection.

"Taking inspiration from ever-evolving surroundings, FIN Oslo collections epitomize a modern, sophisticated Scandinavian look. The signature dusty colours, flowing volumes and attention to detail have led to a strong identity, visible through the collections."

All products are produced ethically; ensuring fair trade values are followed; and are made from organic cotton and bamboo, wild non-violent silk, baby Alpaca yarn or milk fabrics (made from surplus milk proteins that are not intended for food).

The company also buys climate credits based on the level of CO2 emissions from the production of FIN Oslo garments - the funds are consequently invested in renewable projects in the countries where the clothes were produced.

Biodegradable shoes is the latest eco-fashion

oatshoes3.jpg

Do you always wear your shoes until they are full of holes, look like they have been sitting outside for years and perhaps are a bit smelly? And when they have walked down their last pavement and climbed the last set of stairs do you just throw them in the bin? That's a thing of the past if you invest in some OAT Shoes - when worn down simply bury them in the garden, water regularly and watch flowers bloom from your old kicks!

OAT Shoes are biodegradable and is a new initiative in shoe design from Amsterdam that combines attractive style and biodegradable materials to produce sneakers that are easy on the feet and easy on Mother Nature. The prototype collection consists of six sneaker classics with brightly coloured soles to brighten up your step.

The team recently netted an award for green fashion at Amsterdam Fashion Week and the webshop should be up and running soon. Check out their Facebook page to keep up with the latest.

Enter a world where pennies become pendants and cutlery becomes couture.

The Hairy Growler Jewellery Co. craft all of their jewellery from 100% recycled materials like Sterling Silver, coins, forks and spoons - making each item truly unique and from what we have seen absolutely beautiful. If you love the idea but can't see anything that you'd like to give as a present there is no need to worry - they do bespoke items made to your design and preference.

The new spring 2011 collection - Green Fields - is "a place where dreams are filled with colour, contrast and well being." Doesn't that sounds lovely?

We quite like the Silvery Summer Tweets ring (£86), which was made out of an old fork!

emma_watson_ferretti1.jpgThe 'Harry Potter' actress - who recently released her third and final set of designs for ethical clothing brand People Tree - has worked with the Ferretti on an ethical capsule collection which was inspired by British singer-and-actress Jane Birkin.

Speaking to WWD Ferretti revealed she has admired Emma for some time and is impressed with her dedication to green issues. She said: "I'm grateful Emma accepted this creative partnership that can contribute to fashion and to the health of the planet.

"She's an actress I've followed since her early days. I like her freshness, her spontaneity and simplicity. She is intelligent, with a strong personality, a young, modern girl of today but aware of social issues at the same time and very rigorous. This is a moment that demands strong attention to these issues and we can help in communicating them."

Emma - who has worked on five pieces including two dresses, a shirt, a long skirt and a pair of denim shorts for her line called Pure Threads - spoke about her devotion to the ethical clothing cause and said she is delighted that Alberta has gotten involved.

She said: "I'm pleased that a luxury brand such as Alberta Ferretti has decided to create ecological clothes. I believe this is a big step forward for all of the international fashion industry, but also an important step for an increased sensitivity to the problem of ecology."

Gussy Dress exclusive to Selfridges in the UK.jpg Speedo, the world's leading swimwear brand, has unveiled a new fashion collaboration with award winning ethical fashion designers From Somewhere.

Produced using surplus stocks of its revolutionary Speedo LZR Racer suit - the swimsuit banned by swimming's governing body FINA in 2010 - the range features retro 50s styling with a modern twist, combining practical swimwear with high-end fashion trends (pictured right is the Selfrirdges exclusive Gussy dress which boasts a hem made out a selection of gussets from unsold swimwear!)

Launching in Selfridges stores on March 21st 2011, the UK release of the collection will coincide with Climate Week. On International Earth Day (April 21st 2011) the collection will reach an international audience with worldwide exclusive online retail partner yoox.com through its YOOXYGEN brand.

In addition to the wider range (two styles will be available exclusively at Selfridges and two styles will be exclusive to yoox.com) a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to Green Cross International, YOOXYGEN's partner.

Orsola de Castro, co-owner of From Somewhere, said:

"After unveiling the first of our Speedo LZR Racer collaborations at London Fashion Week in September 2010, we have had an enormous amount of fun in designing and producing these latest pieces, and we feel that we've learned a lot about how far we can go, building our confidence, introducing lots of colour and creating designs we're extremely proud of.

"The range comprises a wide variety of products, taking in eveningwear made from over 60 swimsuits, to the super wearable 'Swimdress', a new concept in swimwear as daywear, and we're sure fashion followers will be delighted with the results."

In addition to its release in Selfridges stores in the UK and online exclusively at yoox.com, the 'From Somewhere with Speedo' collection will also be available at Hallelujah in Brussels, Belgium, and in Tokyo's Beams outlet.

* Meanwhile Speedo has partnered again with students from Chelsea College of Art and Design's Interior and Spatial Design degree course to extend the legacy of the sadly obsolete, yet iconic, LZR Racer suit. Unveiled at this year's Ecobuild Exhibition, currently taking place at London's Excel Centre (from 1st to 3rd March 2011), the Space of Waste pavillion features Speedo LZR Racer Fabric with the suits cut into thin strips before being remanufactured through various knitting and weaving techniques, exploring different properties of material and how it can be adapted for a use completely removed from its original purpose.

Eco-chic with Prophetik A/W 11 [gallery]

Comments (6)

Livia in Prophetik.jpgUS eco fashion label Prophetik is causing a stir in the UK. With Livia Giuggioli, owner of Eco - an ecological destination store - and wife of Oscar nominee Colin Firth, wearing the brand on the red (or should that be green) carpet at the Golden Globe Awards recently the future is looking bright, not only for Prophetik but for eco-friendly fashion worldwide.

Prophetik is the creation of Tennessee resident Jeff Garner, and holds an aura of nostalgia to bygone days. Its design principles and philosophies are unpretentious and it uses plant and earth based dyes for all if its colours.

Showing at London Fashion Week, the AW11 collection was inspired by Louis XV's French grandeur with a hint of American prairie life - Garner used one of the quilts he slept under as a child to make one of the jackets. The collection featured big-skirted gowns and corseted bodices, patchwork, and military-style jackets with velvet knickerbockers.

The grand finale was a stunning wedding dress in white "peace" silk, which is produced without the death of the silk worm, sprinkled with ostrich feathers - proving that even brides can be eco-chic.

Swedish clothing behemoth H&M is set to launch a sustainable range - The Conscious Collection - this spring, which is made using recycled and biodegradable fabrics. The collection will hit the shop on 14 April and will have something to offer for all green fashionistas: women, men and children alike, and is "inspired by different shades of white."

The designs will offer a minimalist, tailored look combined with romantic lace, broderie Anglaise, frills and draping.
