It has been called the national British dish, so whether its korma or vindaloo that does it for you, there's something for everyone during National Curry Week. Help a good cause, while enjoying great food!
November 21-27 will see the 13th National Curry Week, this year sponsored by Cobra beer. The annual event (which has been running since 1998) celebrates one of Britain's favourite cuisines. Did you know that the first curry house in the country was opened in London's West End over 200 years ago?!
'
Over the week, participating curry houses across the country will hold special events, including the intriguingly named samosa speed challenge, and even the world poppadom tower record attempt.
'
There is a serious side to this event too, as The Curry Tree Charitable Fund aims to raise money the worlds poor and hungry. In 2000 the United Nations stated that over 800 million men, women and children are denied the most basic human right of all; the right to food. This year, fundraising focuses on the Pakistan Flood Disaster in which 10 million people were left in need of humanitarian assistance, making this a really worthy cause.
While Indian food has somewhat of a bad reputation for being unhealthy, many of the ingredients actually have health properties; coriander is a great antioxidant, and garlic de-clogs veins and arteries, while onions are known to help prevent stomach cancer. What other excuse do you need to indulge!
'
There are loads of restaurants taking part, so to find one near you, visit the national eating out week website for more information.
