If you've ever watched a gardening programme then you might have noticed a crucial part missing from the agenda of green-fingered Alan Titmarsh and co: The green bit. This omission is a bit of a mystery as your garden is the perfect place to make some simple steps towards encouraging endangered wildlife.
Einstein once predicted that man couldn't survive the extinction of bees by more than a few years, but it probably doesn't take a genius to figure out that he does have a point. So, it's more than a bit of a worry to learn that bumblebees have recently faced a huge decline and that two species have become nationally extinct. Read on to find out how you can help...
If you're happy to dedicate a bit of cash (a mere £10, actually) to the cause, then you can order a bumblebee house like the one pictured which is from John Lewis.
However, if you're feeling more creative then The Bumblebee Conservation Trust has some guidelines on how to build a variety of different nest boxes yourself. Don't let the use of the word 'build' put
you off; there are several designs and one of them doesn't require much more than a spade and a paving slab.
Bee Craft runs bee keeping courses throughout the country for those who want a hobby with a bit of a buzz, with courses for
beginners and experts.
You can try growing shrubs and herbs like Buddleia (pictured), Thyme, Fuchsia and Lavender to encourage both bees and butterflies. And if all of this sounds like more effort than you can muster, then worry not, even laziness can be useful. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust suggest that between late-June and early-August is the perfect time to leave an area of uncut grass in your garden allowing wildflowers will grow.

I think you'll find no evidence Einstein ever predicted or said that!!! That doesn't stop it being true though :-)
Just another urban myth to get the public to sit up and take notice.
Buzzzzz
Einstein likely said nothing of the sort. Check out Snopes in google for starters. That doesn't keep it from being loosely based in real science.
When you research the decline of bees in the last 50 years it's pretty scary how apathetic we are. The ignorant masses are needlessly Entomophobic towards beneficial insects and have no idea how important bees and other pollinators are for pollinating the world's food supply.
But, unfortunately, if you are trying to get the apathetic commercial masses to take up and notice, celebrity association seems a sad, yet effective, way to go.
