Did you make today a meat-free Monday?
I've seen people use all kinds of tactics to try and lure people into the joys of vegetarianism from shoving pictures of slaughterhouses in their buger-filled faces to just going on and on about how much great veggie food there is and the health benefits of avoiding animal products. But I've got to admire Sir Paul McCartney for trying to establish a weekly day of vegetarianism with his plan for 'meat-free Monday'.
What's his beef?
Sir Paul is using his idea for regular veggie days to illustrate the amount of C02 we'd save if the entire population agreed to forgo meat for just one day in every week. He sees it as a simple, concrete and almost effortless way we can all feel empowered by helping to curb a problem that's so huge it can leave many people feeling helpless:
"I think many of us feel helpless in the face of environmental challenges, and it can be hard to know how to sort through the advice about what we can do to make a meaningful contribution to a cleaner, more sustainable, healthier world," said McCartney. "Having one designated meat free day a week is actually a meaningful change that everyone can make, that goes to the heart of several important political, environmental and ethical issues all at once."
