The art of upcycling: junky jewellery for spring

I've seen some lovely examples of upcycled jewellery recently, with some new and inventive techniques that have really restored my faith in the artform. Much as I understand that computer circuit boards need to be disposed of responsibly, I'm really not sure that the place I want them 'deposited' is around my neck, so it's good to see some examples of upcycling that make use of other materials that need a new role!

My favourite idea has got to be the necklace made out of laddered stockings (top right) which you can find out how to make, here.

Clockwise, from top left:

• 'Elements of Craft bangle. I love the choice of colour and texture in this bangle, which is made from and inspired by everyday craft materials: fabric, yarn, plastic and vintage buttons. All were castoff's from the sewing box of its maker, SoSheSews.

• 'Ripped stockings' necklace: this amazing creation was the work of DIY queen Smaggle. You can see how she did it direct from her notebook here: the total cost of the project was $1.50

• I'd never have guessed this one myself: the earrings are made from the discarded ends of a dead ballpoint pen! Genius. From JHK Editions on Flickr

• Soda-pop tab earrings: I've seen this method used many times before, but I love the way colour has been used in this fun selection by Sypria. She's selling them for $6 a pop!

• 'City bird' necklace: based on the classic sparrow tattoo image, this pendant is made up from elements of the city, such as a street sign and license plate. $140 by Amuck Design
