Nobody can fail to be shocked and saddened by the stories emerging from this weekend's bushfires in South Australia, and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his government are only just beginning to assess the full scale of the tragedy.
While causes for the fires are still being investigated, with arson definitely playing a part, it has been known for some time that this part of Australia is among the most ravaged by climate change, and experts believe that global warming has been a major catalyst in the deadliest wildfires ever recorded in the country's history. Just before the fires erupted, temperatures were recorded at 46 degrees Celsius (115 Fahrenheit) in the southeast, along with severe flooding in the north.
