'UFO' damages wind turbine...could aliens be behind global warming?

ufo-behind-wind-turbine.jpgExcitement erupted earlier this week, when a wind turbine in Conisholme, Lincolnshire suffered unexplained damage, following reports from local residents that 'strange lights' had appeared in the sky. The giant turbine, used to make green energy by Ecotricity, lost one of its 72-foot blades in what is being described as a freak accident - and it wasn't long before the usual whacky theories started to emerge...

Explanations relating to the unusually cold weather were bypassed in favour of the more speculative theories on extra-terrestrial intervention - my favourite quote coming from local turkey farmer Robert Palmer, who reckoned on the aliens becomnig mesmerised by the strange spinning objects: "It's a rich agricultural part of the country and we have got a concentration of turbines here which may have fascinated them. You just don't know, do you?"

He added: "I saw a white light. It seemed to be above or in the direction of the wind turbine. My wife said it was like the North Star but then it should have been behind us and the light was too low. I don't know what it was. Whether it was a large plane, but it didn't seem to be moving.

Coming back to earth, he expounded on the less fun possibility of existing damage: "I have also heard that there was something structurally wrong (with the turbine). If it was frozen and there was a defect, the blade could have shattered."

A spokeswoman from Ecotricity commented: "We're conducting a thorough investigation into what happened. This kind of thing has never happened to us before."

Meanwhile, I'm just waiting for the conspiracy theories on ET and friends thwarting our efforts to curb global warming to roll in...
