angsty-teen-eco-warriors.jpgTeenagers. They bum about the place, chucking litter wherever they go and laze about in their pants turning the heating up full blast because it's not 'cool' to wear warm clothes. But not this bunch: the angsty teenage eco-warriors are a group of environmentally conscious youngsters who prefer to devote their time to crafting with scrap plastic and re-enacting Shakespeare than consuming. So how did the group come about?

He's got a meteorology degree! He re-uses bags! He switches stuff off! But can you guess where Tech Digest's Duncan Geere will fall down on the eco living front? Watch the video to find out.

UK company Above and Below have made some trainers from old bus seat covers and they actually look quite fetching.

The sneakers have been made in collaboration with First Transport and the Transport Recycling In Partnership (TRiP) and are hi-top basketball type shoes with panels of bus seat fabric on the sides. I think they look rather good and you can't immediately tell the fabric comes from a bus seat. Take a closer look though and I can't help but imagine lighter burns, tinny songs played on mobile phones and graf-ed up windows.

LED christmas lights.jpgWhether you're planning on hiring a tree, growing your own or making one out of books, a tree without lights just isn't a Christmas tree. Traditional lights guzzle a lot of electricity, but a far greener solution is to buy a set of lights made from low energy LEDs.

Will this cost you a fortune? While LED lights used to cost a bomb, the situation is changing as the technology improves.

dove_web_medium.gifI really am amazed and delighted at the endless stream of tip-offs I've had this week for discounts and offers on eco products - you'd think we were going through a credit crunch or something.

But being an ethical soul, I have no intention of keeping this information to myself, and am going to keep you posted on where to go for the best deals. My favourite deal this week has got to be Love Eco's £5 off anything offer, which will be a godsend for my Christmas shopping (details after the jump).

But there are plenty of other offers lurking out there, some of which might slash the cost of the very thing you were looking for. So read on to find out what's landed on my desk this week.

I've been banging on about Asus's trend-setting bamboo laptop for ages now, but it wasn't until this week that Shiny Towers finally got to play host to this long-awaited PC.

Tech Digest's Duncan had a play, and gives his views in the video below.

vintage wedding dress.jpgA short, pre-loved wedding dress with slightly ill-advised bows is not to everybody's tastes, but I fell for the charms of this one as soon as I saw it. Once you get past those bows (which could easily be removed) the fitted bodice looks to be of good quality, and seen up close, the floral applique is really charming. I personally really like sweetheart necklines, and being somewhat prim, it's a great choice for those who want to go so short in the skirt. I can see this being the perfect dress for a thrifty, eco-conscious bride who wants a bit of sparkle but isn't interested in going totally OTT.

christmas_shopping.jpgIt's almost pay day, December is looming on the horizon, your vouchers are in and you're probably preparing to embark on a frenzied mission to (as an old friend of mine affectionately put it) go out and 'buy crap for idiots'. Now, Christmas shopping is an ordeal at the best of times, and you don't need me to remind you why it's likely to be more traumatic for many people than usual this year. But you may find that shopping with your eco hat on could make the experience a whole lot easier.

christmas-tree.jpgLast year we did the whole real vs. artificial trees debate to death, and I'm sure it'll soon be raging once again. But I've recently heard about a third option that could throw open the argument once again, or possibly even solve it: it's the idea of renting a Christmas tree.

So far, I'm only aware of one, solitary farm offering such a scheme: Heeley City Farm in Sheffield. The scheme allows you to collect a tree at the beginning of the festive season, then when twelfth night rolls around, instead of planting it in the garden or gifting it to the bin men, you return it to the farm where it'll be well looked after for another year, ready to do its Christmassy service for another family next December.

heat your home.jpgI don't own my house, but it's about this time of year I tend to start thinking about all the changes I'd make if I did. And since I'm in a constant battle with the thermostat, these are mostly focused on insulating and weatherproofing (though I'd be quite happy for some of the dodgier wallpaper to vanish overnight, too!)

So I thought I'd share some of the ideas I'd put into my dream eco home if I had one, starting with the steps I'd take to get it toasty warm in winter.

Greenpeace continues to keep tabs on the world of consumer electronics with the publication of the latest version of its 'guide to greener electronics' scale. Nokia has not conceded its position as the greenest-rated company, while Nintendo has failed to progress from its zero score. The reason given for Nokia's outstanding score is its commitment to recycling, energy efficiency and policy on toxic chemicals, whilst Nintendo fails on e-waste, C02 emissions and lack of clear targets. Apple has jumped marginally towards the greener end of the scale after removing PVC and BFRs from its iPods

cath-kidston-christmas-bag.jpgThe latest bag in the Cath Kidston Tesco range has just been released to its adoring public, and with its limited edition festive design, it's bound to be one of the most sought-after yet. As with all previous designs, proceeds from sales will go towards Marie Curie Cancer Care, and it's made from recycled PET bottles. I can see this being a very stylish Christmas shopping accessory, and a useful one, too, as the bags are hard-wearing and can carry over twice as much weight as an average plastic bag. If there are still any left, the bags cost £3.50 at Tesco.

tree aid cake bake.jpgTrees and cakes have no very obvious connection, but it's fair to say that a lot of the tastiest things that go into cakes were once part of a tree (cinnamon, dates, pine nuts, pecans and chocolate to name but a few) and these are all ingredients featured in a new recipe booklet from Tree Aid, with recipes by a host of celebrity chefs including Antony Worrall Thompson.
