The days are already getting shorter, darker and gloomier and for some us this means the start of several months of feeling distinctly SAD. So it's generally around this time of year that I start looking for pick-me-ups. I've not yet fired up the energy lamp, but this may be because my daily cuppa is doing the job so nicely: I've been trying organic Matcha, (a rather magical brew that has 137 times the antioxidants of standard green tea) by Teapigs, and it's really putting a spring in my step...
Green tea is nothing new, and it generally gives a good energy boost without the dehydrating and comedown effects associated with other caffeinated drinks. But to my probably ill-educated palate, not all varieties taste that great: it can be quite bitter, and the cheapo green teabags you buy in the supermarket can taste extremely bland.
This is where Teapigs' Matcha really has the edge. The taste is delicate and yet satisfying, and a little goes a long way. The tea comes in powder form, and you need only use a quarter of a teaspoon for each cup. I hadn't heard of Matcha until now, but In Japan, it's been a ceremonial beverage drunk by Buddhist monks and royalty for over 900 years. It's full of antioxidants that are great for staving off cold bugs and keeping you healthy at the time of year when you most need it.
Available to buy via Teapigs or in store at Selfridges.
