Whether you're hosting a big bash or a small gathering, I'm always stunned by the sheer amount of waste a group of people (however civilised!) can create in a short space of time where booze is involved! So, if you're already gearing up for your halloween, bonfire or Christmas party, spare a moment to think about the impact your event will have on the planet.
Here are some suggestions for throwing a greener party:
• Buy FSC-certified balloons
From just £1.99 you can buy a pack of strong, colourful balloons that are made from natural rubber and therefore totally biodegradable -- far better for wildlife when they float away as balloons invariably do. But not only are these balloons better for the environment; the rubber has been fairly-traded and is FSC certified too!
• Make sure your disposables are biodegradables.
Unless you regularly cater for a football team, the odds are you won't have enough glasses to go around when your guests start clamouring for drinks -- and this situation usually calls for plastic glasses. You can still buy plastic glasses without losing green points though: biodegradable plastic cups are available in packs of ten for £2.99. And for kids' parties, you can even buy biodegradable straws.
Beautiful bamboo plates
If you want something a bit more attractive than a biodegradable plastic or recycled paper plate, bamboo does the job brilliantly. These plates are hard-wearing and particularly eco-friendly as they can be washed and re-used. A pack of 8, made from 100% organic bamboo costs £8.
