Community matters at Waitrose

WaitrosePic.jpgWaitrose has always been a good place to indulge in a bit of hippy shopping if you don't mind paying a little extra at the till. And when I visited My local Waitrose earlier today, I noticed that they're putting those extra pennies to good use at the moment, with a scheme to help local charities. Not entirely unusual you might think, but the way they're selecting those charities is quite fun.

When you arrive at the checkout, you're presented with a tiny green disc. This disc is your 'vote' for your local charity of choice, and when you leave the store, each charity has its own clear plastic box with a slot at the top. Whichever box collects the most green discs 'wins' the one-off donation of £1,000, which comes direct from Waitrose, meaning shoppers don't have to pay any extra costs to take part. What's more, you can nominate a local worthy cause of your own. Winning the race at the Holloway Road branch was a proposed city farm, an unsurprising choice from us animal-loving Brits! So if charity shopping turns you on, check out Waitrose's site to see which stores are taking part, then get ready to hit the aisles,

thanks for that - I was given these at Waitrose in Edinburgh (I'd not been in one for a while as I'd lived in a city without one) and wonderd what the little disks where for.
