Armani in deep doo-doo with PETA over baby fur coats shocker

giorgio-armani.jpgUntil now, I've resisted wading in on the debate over Giogio Armani's recent run-in with PETA, but it doesn't look like going away any time soon, so let's pick up the story from here. To recap, Giorgio went and got himself on PETA's shit-list when he used fur in his recent collection at New York Fashion Week. Now, that would normally be more than enough to get PETA's heckles up, but what made his crime all the more serious was the fact that last summer, Armini promised never to use fur in his collections ever again. Did he keep his promise?

What do you think...

The promise was not so much broken, as smashed on the floor and jumped on by Armani, who went on to include fur trims in his men's and womenswear A/W '08 collections: he also used fur in his kids and babywear ranges. Fur coats for babies!? Needless to say, PETA were not impressed...

We're not quite sure what PETA plan to do to Armani next (will his skins be appearing in a gruesome catwalk collection of their own, perhaps?), but you can be sure it won't be pretty. Since the row erupted, they have limited their attacks to bad mouthing Armani among his celebrity friends. They wrote a letter to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, begging them not to pick up on the baby-fur trend and dress little Suri in furs, and have stated the intention to confront people wearing Armani in the street.

Meanwhile, X-files star Gillian Anderson has publically declared her support for PETA on this one, saying: "I am stunned that Armani has gone back on his word," she said. "I can't understand why anyone would want to use real fur, and especially rabbit because it is so easy to replicate as the pile is so short."

I can't help wondering if perhaps Giogio has some sort of masochistic streak showing through here...why else would anybody encourage PETA's venom in such a provocative manner?
