Surfers Against Sewage look for sea change with Young British Artists

surfer-boards-by-artists.jpgBeing so close to the water gives surfers a vested interest in keeping it clean, which is one reason why Surfers Againsts Sewage was formed.

The green surfer dudes recently asked ten of Britain's top artists, including Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk, Damien Hirst and Nick Walker to create exclusive surfboard art to draw attention to their cause, and the results are just stunning.

The limited edition boards were auctioned to raise money towards cleaning up our seas, freeing them from "sewage effluents, toxic chemicals, marine litter and nuclear waste". This netted £77,000, with the 2 Damien Hirst boards going for £59,000.

As for the boards themselves, there's no hypocrisy here: SAS ensured that all the surfboards used in the collection had the smallest environmental impact possible. Each board was made with biofoam and glassed in eco-friendly resins. These 'eco boards' cost the same as traditional surfboards to make (usually they would contain harmful petrochemicals) and weight for weight they are proving stronger than traditional surfboards. Let's hope they catch on amongst this particularly green breed of extreme sports fanatics!
