You'd think that finding a reliable recycling service in central London would be a doddle, but as the papers, bottles and cans pile up around us here at Shiny Towers, we're starting to realise it's not as straightforward as we'd hoped. For homes in the area, there's a regular collection once a week, with bins provided for residents' use. But as a business, we're forced to do our own research and hope we can find a service that doesn't charge too much to recycle our stuff.
This all feels like a lot of fuss for something that the powers that be are supposedly encouraging. Business generate the vast majority of recyclable waste in this part of town, so it worries me to think that many will simply give up the task of finding a provider. Surprisingly, our local council (Camden) has only just started to take away commercial waste in this area, and we've put Shiny's name down to be included on a 'pilot scheme' that will involve a fee -- recycling is not included in our business rates, which also surprised me. I'm also going to look into some private contractors and compare the cost. But until we get the green light to go ahead with this scheme, it's a case of trying not to trip over the waste that's piling up around us. Oy vey!
We'll keep you posted on our ever growing rubbish mound, and on who comes to rescue us from it first....
