Green things to do this weekend: Eco talent-spotting at Graduate Fashion Week
Graduate Fashion Week kicks off at Earl's Court 2 on Sunday, and with it come some exciting new designers who are pushing the boundaries of sustainable style.
I've had a look through the listing and it's encouraging to see how intermeshed the fashion and green movements have become. They include Susannah O'Driscoll (pictured) whose recycled paper lampshade bag won her a place in the exhibition, which attracts fashion scouts from around the world. Other designers with a green slant include Karl Lewis, who is basing his final collection on the joker from the new Batman film: he'll be using ecologically friendly fabrics and recycling old garments when making his collection.
Another green designer making her debut this year is Tanya Burrell, whose final collection is about combining techniques of 'make do and mend' from WWII whilst constructing garments from recycled old fabrics and clothes and organic and ethical fabrics. This resourcefulness is typical of the sort of energy going into sustainable fashion at the moment, and it never ceases to amaze me how many new avenues there are to explore in creative recycling.
The event, which is again being sponsored by River Island runs from Sunday 8th May. Details on tickets, accommodation and getting there can be found here.
