people tree thakoon.jpgPeople Tree's designer collaborations just keep on getting stronger, with each name bringing new flavours to the UK's foremost fairtrade fashion label.

New Yor--based Thakoon, a fave of Sarah Jessica Parker and Demi Moore, has created some gorgeous pieces for People Tree this summer, but my favourite has got to be this sassy, silk babydoll dress. Hand screen printed all over, the dress would be perfect on a hot day, or worn over trousers as a flattering top. The dress is made by well-treated workers in Bangladesh and costs £145

nahui ollin headband.jpgNahui Ollin may not be a name you recognise, but you're bound to be familiar with her recycled bags, which were among the first such items to break into the mainstream fashion world.

Mexican-born Ollin's range has grown rapidly since her first sweet wrapper bags appeared in the shops, and she's recently expanded into the accessory market, with a cool range of headbands. Perfect for hot summer days, each item is reminiscent of her distinctive, colourful bags and clutches, made from the same recycled materials. $16

Lakeside electric car.jpgBeing a shopaholic is no longer incompatible with greener motoring, as electric car charging bays are beginning to appear in more of the UK's malls and shopping districts.

A new project being rolled out by EDF has recently got underway, with the bays now appearing in many of the country's biggest shopping hotspots, including Braehead, Glasgow; Chapelfield, Norwich; The Chimes, Uxbridge; The Glades, Bromley and Lakeside, Thurrock. [Via Treehugger]

teesecheese.jpgEmily Tan writes: Apologies for the absolutely dreadful pun, but I couldn't resist. Until now, most people who can't take dairy, or have turned vegetarian and/or vegan, have resigned themselves to a life without cheese. Mostly because in general, non-dairy cheeses don't melt and taste... odd. Well, fill your eyes on the melty goodness in the image because apparently Teese Cheese DOES melt, and according to Bittersweet, Amy, and The Urban Housewife, it's YUMMY. Sadly for us in the UK I don't think its available yet, but for those of you who can get it it's $7.50 a pound for both Mozarella and Cheddar flavours.

Samsung W510 green eco handsetSamsung is clearly hoping to out-do Nokia in the eco stakes, with the launch of not one but two 'greener' mobile phone handsets, both unveiled at the World IT Show in Korea.

Its new W510 model is made of corn-based, bioplastic, contains no heavy metals and is covered in a non-toxic, water-based coating. Even greener still is the F268, which also has the benefit of not containing any BFRs (brominated flame retardants) or PVC. The latter also meets Energy Star requirements and comes equipped with an alarm to alert you when the battery is full and encourages you to unplug the charger afterwards. A great idea for those in the habit of sleeping through the charging process... [Via Alternative Consumer]

creamy coconut cleanser.jpgThis week, I've been trying out a coconut cleanser by organic skincare brand Essential Care.

I spotted this tasty-looking, organic and vegan cleanser over on Edible Beauty, and having been on the lookout for a mild yet effective cleanser for most of my adult life, decided I'd give it a try. As luck would have it, the test coincided with a particularly dry patch for my skin (which is itself liberally covered in dry patches.) Often, I'll refuse to try a new product at these times for fear of an itchy flareup, but the bottle promised that this cleanser is suitable for 'dry and sensitive skin', and the brand is known for its natural Eczema remedies. So I bit the bullet and slapped it on.

Read on for my verdict!

primark1-thumb.jpgIt's good to hear that the UK's 'least ethical clothes store', Primark, has cut ties with three of its most long-standing suppliers, after learning that they were exploiting children in India. It emerged that all three were sub-contracting embroidery work on dresses to under-age workers.

The chain's chief executive George Weston said "We don't want kids working on our clothes. We bring a lot of good to the people who work in our factories in proper working conditions. We want people paid properly." He added that Primark had sacked another supplier earlier this year, in Bangladesh, for breaking its code of conduct rules on workers' rights.

iqua sun.jpgBluetooth is the next technology to get the solar-powered treatment, thanks to a little widget called the Iqua 603 SUN, which is said to be the first solar powered Bluetooth headset in the world.

The headset has a photovoltaic cell that uses any available light to charge itself, indoors or out. Don't fret if most of your conversations take place in the dark; once charged, you can talk for up to 9 hours in complete darkness. Another unusual feature of Iqua's new solar powered model is how its worn: there's no unsightly ear hook as seen on many bluetooth headsets, as the unit plugs directly into the ear via a single headphone.

recycle old tights.jpgTights present a two-pronged problem for the eco-aware consumer: first, they tend to be among the most disposable elements of our wardrobes, given their tendency to ladder. Secondly, they are a total pain to recycle. But a scheme set up by Tightsplease.com aims to help women in poorer countries while making use of your castoffs at the same time.

The site has got involved with a really worthwhile project that helps women in Ethiopia who have suffered a fistula injury due to complications in childbirth; a problem that is almost unknown in the West. You can by sending them your old (washed) tights. Ladders and holes are not a problem, because following their operations, the women use the panty parts of the tights to hold their bandages in place. Nothing goes to waste as the legs are woven into rugs. Information on where to send your old tights can be found here.

Orange_wind_charger.jpg

Glastonbury revelers will be happy to know that a dead phone battery mid-festival doesn't necessarily mean making no more calls until you get home. This is because Orange will be setting up their giant mobile phone charger again, powered by wind and solar power, to provide much-needed juice for low-powered festivalgoers.

The Orange mobile wind charger is a turbine weighing just 150 grams that can easily be fixed onto your tent and is small enough to fit into your rucksack. Up to 100 people will be able to juice-up at the 7m (23ft) stand.

true grace scented candle.jpgSummertime in a big city can be far from idyllic, as the smells we tend to associate with the season are replaced by airbourne traffic fumes, stale sweat and tarmac. OK, being a born and bred city chick, I have to admit to liking the smell of tarmac, but I could certainly live without the rest -- and that's where these scrumptious naturally scented candles come into their own...

The new 'As it should be' candles are made from clear burning natural wax, and all scents are inspired by warm summer evenings. Choose from freshly cut grass, wild lime, violet and sea shore. Each indulgent candle costs £18 from True Grace

breastsIf someone had told me even a year ago that you'd soon be able to find 100% certified organic shimmering bust oil on the beauty counter I'd probably have laughed. But Florame has cornered this particular gap in the market with a product that promises to 'tighten and regenerate the skin, creating a more youthful look to the décolleté'.

So, if you feel that boob-firming oil would make your beauty regime complete, Florame's is probably a good one to go for: it's not tested on animals, 95% organic, suitable for use by vegetarians and all packaging used is recyclable. £22,99 at Florame.
