Review: Karine Jackson organic hair dye

Getting your hair done in a salon should be a relaxing experience. It requires friendly but not to talkative staff, a selection of up to date magazines, and of course a complimentary glass of champers. However, when you're offered a wine-list from the comfort of the chair you realize you've arrived somewhere really special. Enter the world of Karine Jackson, a finalist for the L'Oreal Colour Trophy and London Hairdresser of the year 2007. She's going to sort me out with a gorgeous colour today, using an Organic hair colour system. [Via Kiss & Makeup]

First off she checked my colours by moving a chart of different shades under my chin. It was really strange how the oranges and reds brightened my skin, whilst blue and green made me look pallid and washed out. We decided I was a 'warm' person , and that I needed bright shades, rather than ashy blondes. I decided to play it safe and opted for roots and highlights, and we decided to style it curly as well. Next step, the application.

Karine started applying the dye to my head and there was an immediate un-reaction. No smell. No stinging. And where was the burning sensation one associates with peroxide? What was going on?

Karine explained that she was using the Organic Colour System on my head. It's a naturally based hair colourant , created with organic ingredients. It contains aloe vera, organic roman chamomile extract and comfrey extract, to nourish the hair and is far kinder to the hair than ammonia based products. It lifts the cuticle through a gentle moisturiser, rather than harsh ammonia, and causes less damage when it penetrates the hair. Everything is sourced to be as natural as possible, with the hair colour containing the lowest percentage of paraphenylenediamines available. It all sounded good, but I wasn't convinced.

My hair always seems to need extra time whenever I'm in the hairdressers chair, so would a gentle dye really lift those roots? Well actually, yes. 'people were wary about using the organic dye on blondes', Karine said, 'But we've found it t have great results which is unusual for lighter shades'.

After I was rinsed and patted dry the towel came off and revealed a golden halo around my head. My hair felt amazing, really soft and silky, and there was no 'ring of redness' around my head, which is y usual experience with hair dye. Karine then dried and styled my hair into stunning Goldilocks curls and I left with a bouncing head of beautiful blonde hair, with a slight stagger in my walk (free champers).

I'd recommend the salon to anyone looking for a relaxing experience, who has an interest in trying organic products.
