It's not green to be fat, scientists say
If you're fighting the flab and didn't already feel enough pressure to be thin, you might be interested in the news that obese people are being blamed for climate change and the global food crisis.
The theory, put forward by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, is that because of their extra bulk, overweight people 'consume more calories' driving up food production. They are also being held responsible for using more fuel than their thinner counterparts (heavier load on transport leading to higher fuel consumption), leading to more pollution in the air.
Now, I happen to think this theory is nonsense for a number of reasons...
Firstly, I'm pretty sure a stick-thin model in a 4x4 is likely to be consuming more fuel than a tubby woman in a mini. It's true that the load carried by a vehicle adds to its energy consumption, but the study seems to have neglected to factor in the load already added by the weight of the vehicle itself.
Secondly, it's a fallacy that fat people necessarily 'consume more calories'. I eat more than almost anyone I know, and am skinny as a rake. If anything, it's fat people who a likely to diet, so their total calorie consumption is likely to be less than that of a 'normal' person.
Finally, what about the fact that fatter people have more insulation and therefore don't need the heating on so high in winter - thus saving energy? I'm not joking about this one...thin people are invariably responsible for bumping up the temperature; a crime I have been guilty of for years. So leave the larger people alone, I say! We can all try and live a greener life without having to resort to blaming people whose metabolism is slower than average.

Bollox. Fat people should be hounded and belittled in the same way that racists are. Peer pressure is a powerful tool, and can give you the needed boost to your willpower. I do not believe obese people are REALLY happy with how they look.
