Review: A'Kin haircare products at MyPure
I'd heard good things about MyPure by a friend who swears by them as a reliable source of body, bath and beauty products, so was really excited to sample some of these for the site. In particular, my nature-loving friend had raved about Australian haircare range A'Kin, available exclusively at MyPure in the UK, so I opted to give it a try.
MyPure's three promises are that it only sells products that are non-toxic, non irritating and non sensitising, which means that any unnecessary synthetic ingredients are outlawed. I tried a few different A'Kin products: read on after the jump for my verdict.
One complaint I often hear about natural and 'hippy' hair products is they don't cater for enough hair types. Until recently, this was true. But the A'Kin range has something for every hair type and need I can think of. My own hair is bleached white in places with purple streaks, so I obviously plumped for the Ylang Ylang shampoo formulated for colour treated hair.
This shampoo smells lovely, and I didn't need to use too much to cover my shoulder-length hair. Bear in mind that this product won't 'foam up' the way ordinary shampoos do, as it contains no sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) which is a synthetic foaming agents. It's still doing good though: my streaks were showing through beautifully once I'd dried and styled my hair. I even got compliments on my colours from co-workers who'd not noticed it in the entire 5 weeks I'd had them in! A definite brightening was seen.
Next, I tried A'Kin Macadamia and Wheat Protein conditioner. This is great for dry and damaged hair, which mine certainly is after all those treatments and dyes. It left my hair feeling smooth, with a slight sheen, and a lot lighter than it might do after using a traditional heavy conditioner.
So it definitely works. But what's so great about A'Kin from a green perspective then? Well, since it contains only natural ingredients, it'll reduce your 'chemical splash' of substances washed down the plughole. It's also good for people with skin conditions, as it contains no irritants. The botanical ingredients used in A'Kin are organic, so they've been grown without the use of pesticides, meaning the whole production process is better for the earth. And the great news is all this goodness won't cost you much more than your normal shampoo and conditioner: each bottle costs just £6.49
Next week, I'll be testing A'Kin's dry hair shampoo and Ginkgo & Jojoba Intensive Moisture Hair Masque.
