Guerilla Gardening sparks "seed bomb" craze
A pair of hooded youths turn up at a patch of abandoned land near a bus stop, tooled up and ready to go. Are they up to no good? On the contrary, they are on a mission to restore our urban space to its lush, green glory with seeds, spades and plenty of love for the land.
Guerilla Gardening is a new phenomenon sweeping cities around the world. Teams of gardeners come out at night to beautify patches of 'orphaned land' and give them a new lease of life with plants and flowers bought at DIY shops, seeds encased in clusters of earth (called 'seed bombs') and tasteful pieces of street art.
After the deed is done, Guerilla Gardners will make their presence known with flyers in the local area, letting residents know the flower fairy has paid a visit. There are some great examples of the difference made by guerilla tactics in several town and cities here.
