SolarRoll-laptop.jpgAs if to assuage their guilt in all matters carbon-related, my colleagues at tech digest have given a nod to Earth Day today with a list of green gadgets to satisfy your geek-fix the green way. Here it is for your scrutiny; follow after the jump for the full list.

1.)SolarRoll - is one of the best for my money. Not only does this little bundle of joy save the planet, it makes your laptop oh-so-much-more portable. I've managed to ghost the battery on my Dell to death. It uses the mains like a life support machine.

The SolarRoll comes in three different sizes of sun-harnessing rubber depending upon what device you want to power, which can be anything from a mobile phone to your computer. They start at a not-too-cheap US$220 and go up to a blimey-I'm-broke US$484 but you'd be the envy of all mobile laptop users and have a very clean conscience. if you don't fancy shelling out the mega-bucks, you could always go for the more specific...

an-inconvenient-truth-702835.jpgJust two years after the original groundbreaking documentary was screened, Al Gore has revealed that he will be releasing a sequel to An Inconvenient Truth.

Gore said: "I have to say the situation has not improved since I made the movie in 2006. Sure, awareness has grown and more people are concerned since scientists said we had just ten years to take action to halt rising sea levels. But the situation has got worse. The entire North Polar ice cap is melting and could be gone in some areas in as little as five years."

Watch this space for news and release dates on the upcoming movie.

earth day healthy planet.jpgIf you've not yet had enough at saving the earth at your desk already today, you might want to check out Healthy Planet; a powerful new tool that allows you to adopt and remotely monitor actual bits of land in protected parts of the earth. Let's look at how it works...

As a site user, you have the option of becoming a 'land guardian', able to view, monitor and put your name to a real piece of land. Your name will then be visible to other users surfing that part of the Earth.

green chic.jpgTo celebrate Earth Day, our chic-lit loving sister site Trashionista is giving away a copy of Green Chic: Saving the Earth In Style by Christie Matheson. It's a great guide to greener living that extends beyond fashion alone, with heaps of useful advice you can incorporate into your busy life. It would also make a great gift for those just starting out on making the green switch.

To be in with a chance of winning, email the editor with "Green Chic" in the subject line. Don't forget to include your name and address and the competition closes at 12 noon GMT tomorrow.

green computing_thumb[6].jpgIt feels like the first day of Spring today, perhaps because of global warming, perhaps because the Earth is trying its best to behave on its special day. Now, I've already given my tuppence on Earth Day, but if you're less of a cynical old stick than I am, you might still want to celebrate 18 years of marking the environmentally aware event. What better way to do this than at your computer?

I've joined forces with the dark side as those gadget freaks at Shiny Shiny have compiled some fun, green activities that you can do from your desk; all sites that are well worth looking into if you haven't yet got around to it. I've added a few of my own for extra Earth Day points. Do send us any we've missed!

• Switch your default search engine to Ecocho for the day - go on, it works as well as google (ok don't quote me on that but it appears to) and they'll plant two trees for every 1000 searches made.

• Give to the needy with a single click over at The Hunger Site, The Animal Rescue Site and the Child Health Site.

• Swap and barter with your wardrobe over at What's Mine Is Yours. You'll earn loads of clothing karma points, and clear some cupboard space at the same time.

summer dresses fitt.jpg

Today is the warmest it's been in weeks, so naturally I'm already browsing my favourite ethical fashion sites for summer dresses. I've noticed a bit of an ice blue theme coming through, and am particularly fond of these three dresses, all of which are made with the utmost care for the environment and workers' rights. From left to right they are:

Sunshine Dress by Komodo; fairtrade, made with a blend of organic and standard cotton. £67.50 at Natural Collection.

Jess Dress in ice by Howies; Crisp organic cotton tunic style dress. £60.

Nomads floral skirt dress; £17.50

earth day 2008.jpgToday is Earth Day, which in many ways is no different from St Patrick's day: everything goes green but nobody really thinks about why.

References I've spotted so far are Yahoo's masthead which is sporting two lovely animated recycling signs, the Google logo, which looks very rustic, and a number of comic strip artists have chosen to tackle environmental issues today. In the real world, the Earth Day Network claim that almost 1 billion people will mark the event at concerts, rallies and neighborhood cleanups in 174 countries. But from what I can gather, very few of these people are resident in the UK...

britain's next top model.jpg

Not so very long ago it was the green movement that was trying to imitate fashion, but now it's surely fashion trying to imitate the greens.

This much was clear in London's Regent's Park today, as contestants from the new series of Britain's Next Top Model took to the grass for an 'eco-friendly' shoot. This consisted of four of the 14 aspiring models posing in outfits made entirely out of bags to promote recycling (and the show) at the same time. What a trashy stunt!

Unplugged.sized.jpgIf -- like many of us bloggers -- you find it difficult to remove yourself from the spod box for even half an hour, this idea will be as a personal challenge as it is an environmental gesture.

The brains behind Carbon Rally have calculated that the electricity required to keep a PC running overnight generates up to 51 lbs of CO2 every month, and the combined energy wasted by consumer electronics in standby mode is as high as 10% of all residential power consumption in developed countries.

orangutans.jpg
This was the scene at Unilever HQ in London this morning, when Greenpeace protestors dressed as orangutans protested against the company's continued use of palm oil in its popular Dove brand. In using the controversial ingredient, Greenpeace claims it is helping to destroy the Indonesian rainforest and its resident primates.

Recent research has shown that Unilever is buying palm oil from companies that are destroying valuable rainforest and peatland areas, which is bad news not only for the millions of people who depend on them for their way of life and endangered species such as the orang-utan, but also for the global climate. Definitely another one to boycott in the supermarket then! [via Londonist]

leopard shoes.jpgOnline clothes swapping hub What's Mine Is Yours already has a cult following among those who like to swap vintage and second hand clothing, with many members setting up their own 'boutiques' on the site.

And now, the eco-conscious site now has a new tool, with resident personal shoppers to help you get the most out of your clothes swapping experience. So if you've got old clothes cluttering up your wardrobe that someone else might love, why not get them on the site and get swapping - now with advice if you need it!

soft_boiled_egg_1-thumb.jpgIt's easy to buy free range eggs in the supermarket: just read the label, look out for those magic words, and hey presto, you've got free range poached, scrambled or boiled eggs for breakfast. But what about all the products containing eggs that we forget are there?

The Good Egg Awards is working to clear up this confusion with a high profile ceremony rewarding those companies that only use free range eggs in their products. Held annually by Compassion in World Farming, the event focuses on products from all over the EU, and previous winners have included Marks & Spencer, Pret a Manger, Sainsbury's and even McDonalds. This year's winners will be announced on Tuesday 29th April.

sigg flask.JPGThe concept of 'designer flasks' is one of those things that would have been laughed out of town just a few years ago. But now it's all quite acceptable to be seen toting the latest coffee accessory, with Sigg leading the way.

And now, you can say 'no' to disposable cups with the latest stylish range of flasks, which recently appeared on the website. I'm particularly keen on this 'Night' design, but Sigg has also re-released the classic design, available in various colours. The flask design slips right into a messenger bag, briefcase or purse. Another benefit of the design is the flask will fit into a back pocket allowing it to be carried without a bag. The classic model is available via the site for $19.99

netgranny.jpgWe've all heard of child labour - which is obviously bad and wrong - but geriatric labour, it seems, is all the rage for conscientious types!

So, if you're concerned that your 'ten for a fiver' highstreet socks came straight from a sweatshop, you can now employ 'grannies' to knit them for you via Net Granny, a Swiss-based site specialising in wholesome, homespun socks. There's even a gallery introducing you to each granny and allowing you to pick who you want making your socks. Each pair costs 27.50 Euro.
