Which brands are greenest? None, say consumers

greenwash.jpgA survey that asked people to name companies that they believe are truly "going green" has revealed extreme scepticism on the part of consumers, the majority of whom gave the answer "none" when it was put to them in by Brandchannel.com. So, when asked about which brands were really serious about sustainable development, respondents offered a resounding, and--perhaps you may want to sit down for this--surprising consensus. Who is really going green? Answer: NOBODY.

Those that did respond by naming a company mentioned in order of votes: Toyota, BP, Body Shop and Honda. Of those that didn't, a typical explanation for such a lack of faith a typical response was that "Companies will pretend they are environmentally aware (e.g. products that may be recycled, reducing carbon emissions, contributing funds to drought relief) except they still have, primarily, only their own interests in mind and are therefore never truly green."

What do you think of this result? Is this a healthy reaction to an awful lot of greenwash, or a cynical attitude that could lead to many people giving up on finding ethical solutions to consumer choices that may well be there for the taking? [Via AdLab
