Earth Hour: Lights out for the planet this weekend
Want to do something positive to show your concern about global warming? This weekend it could be as easy as turning off a light, as a worldwide demonstration for more action against climate change is taking place, with those wishing to show support staging a one hour 'lights out'.
The hour between 8 and 9pm GMT on Saturday 29th March has been designated Earth Hour by the World Wildlife Fund and anyone can participate by switching off lights, TVs, computers (sorry folks!) and other electrical appliances.
Want to know the best way to spend your time in a blackout? Check our suggestions out here.
As well as individuals, several high-profile landmarks will be powering down for the hour, including Brighton Pier, Sears Tower in Chigago, San Francisco Bay Bridge and even Google, which will be turning black! While the energy-saving claims made by Blackle have been more or less blown out of the water now, we understand this will be more of a symbolic gesture.
It's easy to be cynical about yet another symbolic hour of darkness, but I believe that the more such gestures are made, the stronger and clearer the message will become. I also applaud WWF for choosing to stage this protest in winter, and at a time when most people would normally be using lights and other electricals. Apart from being more honest than holding it at a time when lights are already unnecessary (Lights Out London's decision to hold a 'blackout' on the longest day was a little pointless) it'll make for a far more dramatic change to the skyline!
