CND's 'peace' sign celebrates 50th birthday

CND.jpgCND, with its familiar sign, which has become one of the most well known symbols on the planet after numbers and letters of the alphabet, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week.

The anti-war, anti nuclear campaign was launched in London amid a very real fear of nuclear conflict in 1958. Since then, it has attracted eminent scientists, politicians, hippies, students, business people and other individuals, all with a common interest in not getting blown up.

But many will be asking themselves this week how much good the campaign has done in its half century existence, when in the UK alone we are on the brink of a 'new nuclear age'. Big talks between Gordon Brown and French President Sarkozy later on in the week are set to address the re-commissioning of Britain's moribund nuclear power stations, in what sounds suspiciously like a done deal...
