The Story of Stuff: pleading for a sustainable future

story-of-stuff.jpg

I doubt this will come as a shock to readers of Hippyshopper, but we're in the grip of an obsession with "stuff". How to reach a young audience in a plea for a more sustainable future while recognising that some stuff is just plain appealing?

Annie Leonard is here to help. The Story of Stuff is an impassioned potted history of consumer production, narrated by a live-action Leonard surrounded by her doodles. It's based on ten years of travel and research from Leonard; given that it covers areas such as the toxicity in the consumer cycle and the threat to the purity of breast milk, you can't expect big corporations to be granted much of a right to reply here. Yes, it's probably biased, but the claims are also convincing enough to ring true; as with every piece of research of its kind, be prepared to do your own digging.
