H&M bans Australian Merino wool from collection
PETA’s complaints about the Australian wool industry have not fallen on deaf ears, in fact they have been heard by retail giant, H&M.
Ragtrader is reporting that H&M have banned the use of Australian wool in their designs. PETA’s complaints were that the Australian wool industry had "reneged" on a promise to phase out the practice of mulesing sheep - a technique used by farmers to prevent flystrike - by 2010.
PETA reportedly received an email from the H&M head of environment and corporate social responsibility, which said she would start looking for non-mulesed wool alternatives immediately. "We will look for other countries of origin than Australia and we will not investigate any certifications or other ways to prove that merino wool from Australia originates from farms that are not practising mulesing."
What do you think of this news? Should H&M investigate the claims before jumping to conclusions? After all PETA have been found to be not tell the full story before. Pink had to backtrack on her attack on the Australian wool industry, saying that she was misinformed over the mulesing issue by PETA just last November. [Via Catwalk Queen]
