Glastonbury campers to get potato tent pegs

glastonbury-2004-pyramid-l.jpgLast year saw the greenest (and possibly the wettest) Glasto ever, but organiser Michael Eavis isn't going to let it end there. In fact, he's already planning the details of how this year's event is going to build on the standard set in 2007.

These include a plan for eco-friendly tent pegs, which are to be made from biodegradable potato starch. The problem with the normal metal sort is that they can injure grazing dairy cows which inhabit the field once the festival is finished. The metal pegs are "a real problem for the cows", said Eavis. The potato pegs, which organisers are buying in advance, will therefore be made compulsory for campers this year.

The move is part of a series of environmental measures called "Leave No Trace" which are to be announced in March. I look forward to hearing what else the ever-industrious team behind Glastonbury have up come up with to make the festival even greener!
