The Skinny Bitches are back to help you cook more slimming vegan fare...

The creators of vegan diet cookbook “Skinny Bitch” are back with another paean to the weight-loss potential of an animal-free diet. “Skinny Bitch in the Kitch” picks up where its predecessor left off, teaching readers to eschew meat and dairy on the grounds that both are hard to break down, and – you guessed it – make you fat. As someone who lost a significant amount of weight by going vegan, I’m obviously rather biased, but I’m aware that it’s not the same for everyone – and it’s a bit of a reductive statement to say “going vegan makes you thin”. That’s not what this book does, thankfully.

It doesn’t give you complete free reign within a vegan diet, and it also talks about things like avoiding processed foods and sugar. It quite sensibly attempts to undemonise carbohydrates, and reassure readers that, in the right quantities, they are perfectly reconcilable with an effective slimming regime. With recipes including Stuffed Mushrooms and Spicy Sushi Rolls with Avocado and Cucumber, Big-Ass Veggie Burrito and Bitchtastic Brownies and Cheezecake, they’re definitely trying very hard to make you feel as if you’re not missing out!

It’s good to see them taking the time to actually explore the animal rights issues in depth, too, which is something a lot of people don’t do when they’re extolling the virtues of a vegan weight-loss plan. The only reason I have reservations about this book is that I’m not really an advocate of anything which feeds into the size 0 culture quite so overtly. It’s a shame that the central concern of the book is being thin, and not just following a vegan diet in order to be healthy - although I’d be the first to admit that “Healthy Bitch” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it! It's great for the animals, but is it as good as it sounds for the people who are reading it?
