The Big Recycle 2008: Christmas Cards

recycle%20christmas%20cards.jpgAs the new year gets underway, recycling bins everywhere are in for the biggest treats of their lives. This is thanks to an ambitious scheme set up by the joint forces of The Woodland Trust and Recycle Now, who want to recycle as many of Britain's 100 million Christmas cards and raise enough money to plant 24,000 trees.

As you might imagine, reaching this lofty target will have to involve making the process very easy indeed so that even the laziest and most apathetic will take part. And sure enough, special collection bins will be available throughout January at mainland WHSmith high street stores, Tesco stores, TK Maxx stores and all M&S stores including selected M&S Simply Food stores. All you need do is bring your old cards along next time you're out shopping, and they'll be safely kept aside for recycling.

All the cards collected during the campaign are taken to paper mills where they are recycled into brand new paper products, with the money raised helping the Woodland Trust plant thousands of new trees throughout the UK.

Sue Holden, chief executive of the Woodland Trust, said: "The UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe - just 12% of the UK is covered by woods compared with the European average of 44%. "By recycling your cards, you can help us plant thousands more trees throughout the UK."
