Chicken Out: results come home to roost
Supermarkets are now 'struggling' to keep up with the demand for free range chicken following Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's expose of the poultry industry earlier this month.
Sainsbury’s has reported a 60% surge in demand for free range – and a 55% increase in demand for organic), while Waitrose saw demand for organic chicken rise by 31% in the second week of January while sales of free-range meat went up by 24%. Other supermarkets, however, have been oddly quiet on the issue...
In a recent appeal to supporters, Fearnley-Whittingstall has asked that shoppers at these establishments help him provide evidence that free range birds are flying off the shelves everywhere: he wants you to take a picture of the free range poultry section of your local supermarket and send it to him. He is particularly keen for signs explaining why free range produce is out of stock. So why not have your camera phone at the ready and get set to do some amateur journalism next time you're doing your weekly shop?
