B&Q has stuck firmly to its green principles this week, with a surprise decision to stop selling patio heaters. Ownership of the gas-guzzling garden features is predicted to rise from 1.2m to 2.3m this year, with B&Q the biggest retailer -- until now. So what's so bad about them? As someone who feels the cold very badly I have to admit I'll need some pretty serious convincing...
The facts, I'm afraid, are sobering. From the Energy Saving Trust: "One standard propane patio heater with a heat output of 12.5kW will produce around 34.9kg of CO2 before the fuel runs out (after approximately 13 hours). This is equivalent to the energy required to produce approximately 5,200 cups of tea".
Oh. My. Goodness. Kind of makes my energy saving kettle seem a bit insignificant when I was happily turning a blind eye to pubs that want to stop me shivering. Well done to B&Q for bringing this shocking statistic to the public's attention, and can I suggest we all invest in some good, warm winter outerwear!
