Good news for eco-minded Londoners: Siân Berry – Green party candidate and all-round cool dudess for her work with the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s is standing as her party's candidate for London Mayor in the 2008 Mayoral Election.
If she succeeds in bagging Ken's job, Siân plans to make Parliament Square a zone of 'free protest', where demonstrations are positively encouraged and assisted by police. She would also bring in reduced transport fares and free insulation for all, which would save ordinary Londoners significant amounts of money as well as helping everyone to live greener lives.
Siân also recognises that living greener lives is a tough prospect for cash-strapped Londoners, saying: "I know that life is a struggle for most of us in London. If it's not the chaos of our transport network, it's the high cost of living, the daily struggle to make a living wage, or crazy levels of rent and mortgages. Our vision is clear: we will bring in the right policies to help everyone achieve a better, more affordable, greener life in London."
While it might seem an outside chance that a green candidate could win this election, I think that these policies are particularly relevant to London, even for those who aren't worried about the environment. We all want cheaper (and better) transport in a city that's gridlocked to the max. I'll be rooting for her all the way!
