Marks and Spencers enter it-bag territory

MS_GIRLS_BAGSmain.jpg

Step aside Anya Hindmarch: Marks and Sparks will soon to be selling the hottest bags on the high street soon.

At least, that's what the chain wants to do, as part of its ongoing Plan A initiative to reduce its carbon footprint. A new range of tote bags has been launched, featuring black and white illustrations of style icons associated with M&S. There are four designs to choose from, including Twiggy and Erin O'Connor, and they'll soon be available for £2.50 in stores across the country.

I can't help noticing that everyone's had a go at launching an it-bag now and can't see this one taking off with any more of a bang than other jazzed-up supermarket shoppers or fashion totes. But good on M&S for discouraging plastic bag use and I'll be looking out for the bags out on the street. Now, I just hope they'll think about re-designing their self-service tills to accommodate canvas bags *grumble*!
