Scotland's first green spa opens for business

This tranquil scene shows part of the new Yu Spa, now based at the Apex City Quay hotel in Dundee. It's Scotland's first 'eco spa', complete with state of the art low-energy technology and all natural products at hand for those in need of a bit of green pampering.

The running of the spa is based around some fairly cool and innovative ideas for reducing energy and chemical use: these include an 'ozone pool', which uses minimal chlorine; its hot tubs which use ultraviolet lighting to clean themselves (so fewer chemicals), and all its pool lights have been changed over to energy efficient LED lights. It is estimated that this will save £57,000 per year.

But it's not all technology and flashiness that makes this spa 'green': the gym equipment and televisions are switched off at night and members of the gym are provided with Yu Spa water bottles to encourage them to refill rather than buying plastic drinks bottles. And showers have been fitted with flow regulators to reduce wastage - all great examples for other hotels and gyms elsewhere.

How much will a visit set you back? I was actually very surprised to find that a day pass, including meals and full use of the facilities costs around £50 - a lot less than I've paid at 'normal' spas!
