I have to admit I've never understood the fuss about Colin Firth, but having heard he's a very committed eco-worrier on the quiet, Mr Darcy suddenly has a lot more going for him! And the latest I've heard is that Firth is about to open a new 'green boutique' in West London called Eco Age.
The boutique, which will open in Chiswick High Street on 1st December, will not only be selling top-notch fairtrade and sustainably-produced stuff; there'll be advice on greening up your life and home from a team of experts on offer, too. Added to this, it aims to be the UK's first fully self-sufficient shop - solar heated and lit with wind turbines and solar panels you'll be able to see for yourself.
More surprising still, it turns out this isn't Firth's first foray into ethical trading, either: he already owns two fairtrade coffee bars in London: Progreso in Notting Hill and Covent Garden. He's even been to Ethiopia with Oxfam to highlight the plight of coffee farmers “whose weekly wage is what you would pay for a single coffee”. So why hasn't he been embraced by the upper echelons of the ecorazzi? Maybe he just likes to keep quiet about it, which is usually a good sign of commitment to the cause...
