Tax on bigger cars popular with voters

cameron.jpgA new poll by Ipsos-Mori shows the public are pretty much in favour of many of the Conservative party’s proposals on ‘green’ taxes. The most popular of the proposed measures is the tax on gas guzzling 4x4’s and other big polluting cars with 64% in favour. The next most popular at 62% is the incentive scheme for low carbon houses. The issue of freezing airport expansion was favoured by 49% with only 20% wanting our airports to expand. Two of the measures proved to be unpopular with the public, the first, adding VAT to domestic and short haul flights, the second charging parking fees at out of town shopping centres, which unsurprisingly have been dropped by Mr Cameron. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the governor of California, was quick to praise Mr Cameron who said: "By being a strong and forceful voice on climate change, Mr Cameron helped strengthen Britain's resolve to set an example on this issue."

Taxation is always a thorny issue for any political party, It’s the kind of thing people accept in theory, but hate in practice. Whether the poll will translate into popular feeling if the taxes come into effect is a different matter. It’s like asking people if they would pay higher taxes for a better NHS service – most people would say yes if asked, but I’m sure they would complain if their taxes went up.
