Supermarkets get greener
An annual report by the National Consumer Council claims that supermarkets are getting better, if slowly, at providing ‘green’ and 'ethical' produce at a price that’s available to all. The report took into account areas such as the availability of seasonal vegetables, packaging, and also commented on the use of plastic bags.
Coming as no surprise, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose gained the best grades and highest praise overall, but there have also been improvements by the bigger chains, with Tesco and Asda getting a nod for doing better than the previous year.
If this shows that buying power truly is the way to change how the supermarkets act, then hooray to that. But in a wider sense, I’d be more interested to see how these massive companies are increasingly fitting the more small-scale terms ‘ethical’ and ‘sustainable’ into their business models – I still can’t see how they make happy bedfellows.
