New 3mm thick Sony TV uses the same amount of energy as an average lightbulb

Sony has announced that its new OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TV, the XEL-1 11-inch OLED TV, which is an astonishing 3mm thick, will be available in Japan from December. OLED technology uses liquid crystals, which means its screen requires less backlight to function - hence the TV's ability to use roughly the same amount of energy required by a lightbulb in its operation.

Sadly, as this early stage, there are still downsides to all this. Although the TVs will, as their name suggests, measure only a measly 11" across, they're likely set you back a vast sum of money. They don't last for very long either - oxygen eventually deteriorates the diodes on the screen and makes the image grow faint.

Hmm the 'average' lightbulb... hmm...?
Average in Las Vegas, or average in Nepal?
