Free, unique shopper bags from Morsbags

morsbags.jpgHere's the bad news: If you want one of these bags, you'll have to keep your eyes peeled while out and about! The funky totes, which are made from all kinds of vintage and re-claimed materials, are currently being handed out at random in the street, in a bid to discourage plastic bag usage a not-for-profit organisation Morsbags.

And the good news: totally reusable, the bags are made using material from old curtains, duvets and other sources. They're all made by volunteers, most of whom follow a pattern on the website. These volunteers can form "pods"; crafting groups in their local area, for moral support and tips, and these are springing up all over the UK.

Over 6000 morsbags have been made since January, potentially replacing over 2.5 million plastic bags if each unsuspecting new owner continues to use their morsbag in place of new carriers.

Actually, there's more good news to this story! It's really easy to make your OWN morsbags - the pattern is on the website, as it says , so you don't have to wait & hope to be "guerilla bagged" in the street. If you want a morsbag (or lots of morsbags!) - make one, make as many as you want. Most people have hand-me-down curtains, or sheets, or duvet covers tucked away in a cupboard. Morsbags have been made out of shirts, jeans, outgrown children's dresses - anything that will give you two pieces of material 18"x20" plus 2 handles 4"x20", or thereabouts (all measurements can be varied if you wish).
Happy Morsbagging!

And if you find that you enjoyed making something useful & attractive out of unused fabric, you could always make some more & give them away to people in the street!
