Equitable Gourmet - Lebanese Treats with an Ethical Stance
Fair, convenient and utterly good-for-you-delicious, Equitable Gourmet is all about traditional Lebanese food that tastes like home cooking - but better.
Their wholesome moussaka or loubieh (green beans in tomato sauce) taste steps ahead of most jarred dishes and sauces. And when it comes to spreads, you can forget peanut butter, and tuck into their tahini & grape molasses with sesame. It may be sweet-sweet but it’s also nourishing, warming and perfect on toast.
Other treats include rose and orange blossom water, pomegranate molasses (be brave and put some on roasted root vegetables) and beautiful extra virgin olive oils.
But my personal favourite has to be the Makdous (pickled aubergine and walnuts) - softly salty and a tiny bit sweet - this is good stuff indeed.
The whole range is vegan and made without any additives, fillers or any of that muck and comes in rustically designed jars and pots - making them a great, original gift. Plus for all of us who like our food fair as well as fine, Equitable Gourmet comes with an ethos of working with NGOs to help small producers trade with the developed market. The result: fair prices all the way down the supply chain and 25% of the profits given back to the suppliers.
