Dita Von Teese defends decision to wear fur despite figureheading PETA campaign

dita%20von%20teese.jpgHot on the heels of her appearance in PETA's new ABC (Animal Birth Control) campaign video, Dita Von Teese has experienced a deluge of criticism for masquerading as an animal rights advocate despite insisting on wearing fur. Von Teese defended her choice of attire in arguably quite pathetic fashion, explaining that the furs were vintage, and worn only occasionally.

Even if what she claims about the furs is true, it still seems strange that a genuine animal rights activist, especially one who is constantly in the public eye, would opt to flaunt a taste for adorning herself in bits of dead animals. There is a definite lack of respect for the animal inherent in this gesture, even if Von Teese didn't buy the furs new, and doesn't approve of the practices involved in procuring such items of clothing.

well, that's why she isn't in the "I would rather go naked than wear fur" campaign, silly!

Good for her. She stands up for what she believes in, in HER OWN WAY without selling out to PETA's brainwashing.

When you open your mouth to speak out against something in the public eye, you better not be a hypocrite or you WILL get called on it. As far as PETA's "brainwashing," I believe they use a technique known as "reality check" -- many hours of documentary video footage of animals being anally electrocuted, necks snapped, etc. on fur farms. Excuse me for "selling out," but PETA has accomplished many milestones in shining the light on all animal cruelty. Something wrong with that?

This is not much better than my mother's justification: 'Well, it's dead now anyway...'

This woman gained notoriety by marrying a garish man, and routinely removing her clothes in front of paying audiences. She has no talent, no brains, no scruples and no ethics. What a pathetic hypocrite.

"Standing up for what she believes in?" She obviously believes in rationalizing abject cruelty, or she would not wear fur.

PETA "brainwashing"? That's absurd, too. PETA disseminates information that is concealed from the public to sell products. If more people watched electric rods being rammed up minks' anuses and watched the animals quiver and shriek before they die, they would realize there's nothing elegant about fur. If more people watched raccoon dogs being skinned alive by Chinese sadists, they would realize fur is not cool. It's utterly repulsive.

Normally I try to refrain from name calling, but Von Teese is seriously IQ challenged!

This is like campaigning for civil rights, then wearing a Ku Klux Klan outfit to a party. [Well, gee I found it at a thrift store, and I only wear it occasionally. ..]

This is like being pro-Israel and wearing a swaztika belt buckle "occasionally" because "it's a vintage collectible I found on E-bay."

This is like proclaiming you're vegetarian, then slurpin' up some steak tartare because somebody served you a raw beef appetizer.

Oh, please. PETA is a group of hypocritical loonies. They're the last ones I'd go to for facts. Harassing people in the streets about eating meat, killing thousands of animals each year in their animal "shelters" and brainwashing young people into putting animals before humans and promoting an all-round retarded ideology doesn't make me a fan. If you want to go veg, by all means. But don't treat omnivores like we're brutal caveman.

Now, I support the right of an animal to a humane life and death and am against the fur industry but PETA is ridiculous. The only mistake I see here was Dita working with those wackjobs in the first place.

Sure, I'd love it if Dita lost the fur but she isn't the crazy one here.

Oh, and Judith, if you would actually learn a bit about what she does and who she is, you'd find that she is a very intelligent woman. I would disagree with her on tons of things but I certainly wouldn't insult the lady.

And about Manson: who hasn't made mistakes? She's handled the divorce marvelously.

There was a time, not long ago, when black people were used as slaves, children were considered immune to pain (and so under went major surgery) and I think that one day, we will look back at what we have done to the animal kingdom like we look back in shame at past injustices.

PETA is about educating, bot bullying, so although I hate to see fur still being worn in this day and age, I think if people are educated on where this fur actually comes from, then hopefully people will see sense. It has been proven that alot of fur isn't even sold as what it says, so people could be wearing someone's beloved pet. Not that this is any worse then rabbits, minks, raccons etc being bred for fur. If everyone bycotted fur, leather, wool and ate a vegan diet then the world would be a more humane and healthy place.

this isn't THAT different to when PETA were promoting harvey's (or another chain like that) veggie burgers on their site. they were encouraging people to buy them, which in turn supports the meat industry BIG TIME.

it was pretty shitty and hypocritial. i see where dita is coming from, and at least she's not supporting the fur industry by not buying new furs.

who cares, dude. they are vintage. you want to see them lying around and not being used. if they were donated to a shelter or given to a poor person would you start judging the poverished? give me a break.
