Britain is 25th greenest place to live in the world

finland.jpg

A list of countries which ranks their relative environmental impacts, from most environmentally friendly to least, has just been released. The list was created by US environmental economist Matthew Kahn, using the United Nations' 2006 Human Development Index and the 2005 Environmental Sustainability Index. Factors taken into consideration included renewable energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and conservation efforts. General quality of life was also looked at, with things like levels of education, employment and health swaying final results as well as environmental concerns.

According to the list, Finland is the most environmentally friendly country. Ethiopia was judged to be the least environmentally friendly. In general, Scandinavian countries came out on top, and countries in Asia featured nearer the bottom of the list.

I have to question the data and methods on a study in which the West dominates the top third of a list of the most environmentally friendly countries. I mean, thank God for the industrialized, car-crazy West, or the Earth's environment might seriously be in trouble!

I live in urban, busy and business Singapore. We don't have a lot of space or land mass but this little Asian country is also know as the "Garden City". Go see the Internet for all this info. The fact that Britain made the "Greenest" places doesnt mean it's better in living conditions or it's more scenic or beautiful.

Yea, our ndustrialized, car-crazy West, is more environmentally stable.. don't believe me? try making all the food/boiling all the water (literally all of it.. so that its safe to drink!) for your family by burning wood/refuse for a week.. and tell me that a microwave is like totally way worse..

Hi to All,

I've been concerned since the 70's about our environment, yet it takes over 30 yrs. later for the world to take notice. The requirements we have to be aware of is a long list of do's & don'ts in saving our earth, the very breath we breath. The growing problem of children born into a world which cripples them from the start with all kinds of respitory problems-it's not the genes it's the people whom are responsible for those problems. There is one HUGE neglect in our recycling. Numerous households toss their container's etc., with remnants of food etc., still remaining. Is it ignorance or sheer laziness? Imagine the workers whom sort these recycables? I would place it second after septic employees as a gross factor in their jobs.
So come on people-wash those recycables. Remember part of our taxes enable recycling programs-so there is needless hours spent sorting the GARBAGE from the recycables. Just think of municipal funds wasted in the extra time spent unneccesarily resulting from our inconsistancy, which could be used in other areas!! Come on-spread the word!!!!!!!
