Religious leaders pray for the planet

iceberg2.jpgJust when you thought the world was about to cascade into an inevitable cycle of decline, courtesy of global warming, religious leaders have come to save the day with the power of prayer. On Friday religious leaders came together on a cruise ship, in a silent “prayer for the planet,” alongside a diminishing Greenland glacier. This forms part of an expanding spiritual crusade to tackle climate change. The prayer was a means of voicing concerns to God rather than requesting the end of global warming.

Arctic ice has decreased to the smallest amount on record this year and most experts are attributing this to human use of greenhouse gases. Musharraf Hussein, a British Muslim leader said,

"This prayer is a recognition that we have spoiled the earth and we now need to rectify this by changing our lifestyles. We seek the help of our creator to acquire the strength and ability to make the necessary changes."

If only prayer could stir the whole of humanity to transform their lifestyles to greener ones. The North Atlantic island of Greenland has enough ice to raise world sea levels by around 7 metres if it all melted in the ensuing millenia. I don’t think praying is going to save the world unfortunately, although, at least some people are acknowledging humanity's responsibility and taking steps in the right direction. Short of a reliably predicted armageddon taking place within the next few years, I think the government is going to stick to pontificating about counteracting global warming.
