Coca-Cola plans to recycle all U.S. plastic bottles

cocacola.jpgCoca-Cola is intending to invest over $60 million in order to construct the world’s biggest plastic-bottle-to-bottle recycling plant and support recycling in the United States. This forms a part of their overall goal to recycle or reuse 100 per cent of their polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles in America. The recycling plant will be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina (opening in 2008) and generate around 100 million pounds of food-grade PET plastic for reuse every year. Coca-Cola has also invested in recycling facilities in other countries. Over the next decade the plant is apparently going to eradicate the production of one million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Whilst I appreciate the benefits of recycling, excessive consumption of Coca-Cola and many other fizzy soft drinks is a recipe for poor health. Those who frequently drink soft drinks have a reduced calcium intake, along with decreased levels of magnesium, ascorbic acid, riboflavin and vitamin A. Soft drink consumption may be a huge factor in the onset of osteoporosis, through leaching calcium from the bones. Coca-Cola is also very acidic, contains caffeine, which has been linked with health concerns and an array of other far from healthy ingredients. I remember my dentist telling me years ago to stop drinking fizzy drinks because it was eroding my tooth enamel.

I am not convinced by Coca-Cola’s attempts to jump on the green bandwagon. If they really cared they would produce a drink that was health giving rather than health taking.
