George Saves the World: new green books for kids
I have recently come across the Eden Project range of children’s books which my children love. George Saves the World by Lunchtime by Jo Readman and Ley Honor Roberts is a really lovely story about George, his sister, dog and Grandpa. George learns that there’s more to being a superhero than just wearing your pants on the outside, with his Grandpa teaching him how you can save the world with everyday actions such as repairing and recycling.
Then there’s The World Came To My Place Today by the same authors with the same characters, but this time discussing where common household items come from. It’s fascinating, especially for younger children, to hear how much of the world comes to your house every day in your food and possessions, and the illustrations are colourful and eye-catching.
It’s great that there’s so many of these kinds of books around these days, I certainly don’t remember anything on this theme from my own childhood. My children are already much more aware of the impact of our actions as a family on the world around us, and are keen to recycle and re-use things, as well as understanding why we don’t buy as much as some people. Highly recommended.
