Viva! is having some notable successes in their endeavour to create a foie-gras free Britain. Viva! has successfully persuaded Lidl, Makro and House of Fraser to stop selling foie-gras and now they can add Harvey Nichols to the list.
Following peaceful protests outside their Manchester and Edinburgh stores and a decline in sales, luxury lifestyle chain Harvey Nichols has decided to cease the sale of this inhumane delicacy in all their British stores, after the current stock is sold out.
Foie-gras is not produced in the UK but it is legal to import it. Government minister Ben Bradshaw has encouraged a consumer boycott and 138 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion to ban the sale of foie-gras in the UK. Production of the delicacy has already been banned in Poland, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Israel.
I sincerely hope that Viva! continue to be successful in their efforts to get foie-gras outlawed in Britain. Shoving a pipe down a goose or duck’s throat and forcing it to consume huge quantities of food that makes its liver become swollen and diseased, so that we can then eat it, is immeasurably cruel. There is nothing luxurious and refined about torturing another living being for our pleasure. Viva! is encouraging consumers to reject foie-gras and go veggie.
