Fashion Detox: Alex Martin's Brown Dress and Recycling Project
When most of us talk about having nothing to wear, what we really mean is there is nothing we WANT to wear even when our closets are bursting at the seams. One artist, a woman named Alex Martin, decided to challenge the idea that women best express themselves through clothing. And so, every day for a year, she wore the same brown dress. The Brown Dress Project may be done, but now Alex has just completed a new fashion adventure - The Recycling Project.
The Recycling Project is an experiment in fashion detox. For one year, Alex wore only clothing - and that includes underthings and shoes - that she made herself from materials already in her possession. A closed loop, as she puts it on her site. [Via Crafty Crafty]
I don't know if I'm ready for that kind of fashion challenge just yet, but the possibilities it explores are really intriguing. Not only does it remove the power of mainstream fashion from our everyday lives, it reduces our ecological footprint in a way that even buying green cannot do.
I can't wait to see what Alex Martin does next.
