Dr Bromer's all purpose soap: perfect for cleaning, polishing and...date rape?
Dr Bronner's all-natural soap has been a hippy staple for years, and you'd think there wasn't a more innocuous substance on earth. But a string of reports have recently suggested that the the soap's 'many functions' may include some that are little more sinister than washing up...
In a bizarre series of events, Don Bolles, drummer with The Germs, was arrested earlier this year. When police searched his van, they found a Bolles' trusty bottle of Dr Bronner's soap, which tested positive for date-rape drug GHB. He was subsequently jailed.
But the soap brand's founder, David Bronner, soon came to Bolles' rescue, insisting that owing to their chemical properties...
Dr. Bronner's and other natural soaps 'always tests positive for GHB', as will various deodorants. The Bronner family were so keen to get this point across that they did so in a video, explaining the links between 'soap, drugs and rock 'n' roll'. They also stressed that the soaps 'will not get you high'! The result shown by the police kits is a false positive.
At the time of the arrest Mr. Bowles was driving his girlfriend, and fellow musician Cat Scandal to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Newport Beach. “I had heard of GHB but the police had to tell me what it was,” said Bolles. “I’m going to fight these charges.". All charges have now been dropped
